In August, we reported that the government had extended the 3-month ban on puberty-blockers that took effect in June 2024. The prohibition Order will now be extended to 31 December 2024 through the Medicines (Gonadotrophin-Releasing Hormone Anaglogues) (Emergency Prohinition) (Extension) (No.2) Order 2024. The series of extensions is necessary because the prohibition cannot be made permanent until the Secretary of State has followed a statutory consultation procedure.
There are some exceptions to the prohibition, including supplies on NHS prescriptions except that NHS regulations in England and Wales prevent prescribing for gender dysphoria in specified cases. Further details are in our earlier news items.
